The expected value of the nth largest value (for some n) in a standard normal distribution sample of a particular size, used in normality testing.
- For a sample size of 6, the rankits are approximately −1.2672, −0.6418, −0.2016, 0.2016, 0.6418, and 1.2672. This means, for example, that the second largest value of a sample is likely to be around 0.6148.
- A special problem illustrated in this example is the case of ties, or variates of identical magnitude. In such a case we sum the rankit values for the corresponding ranks and find their mean.
