  1. A message that conveys information that the sender does not wish to convey.

    • Unless there are caring adults in such children's lives, verifying their self-worth, these children are likely to believe the tragic "mismessage" of worthlessness.
    • Consequently incongruence between the elements can result in a mismessage. For example, a verbal communication could state That's OK and fine with me whilst non verbal cues (avoiding eye contact etc.) could have an opposing effect.
