The Wise Wound
The Wise Wound: Menstruation and Everywoman, Penelope Shuttle and Peter Redgrove; pg. 23///////////There will be no offspring without an egg, and though ovulation is usually said to occur in the middle of the menstrual cycle, half-way between one period and the next, human beings may ovulate at almost any time of the cycle under stimulus, as the presence of a desired love, or the woman’s own wish for a child. Ovulation may not happen at all during an ‘anovular’ cycle, for reasons which may be emotional, obscure, physiological, or social. A bomb explosion will do it. One’s first menstrual cycles are often anovular. Menstruation may cease altogether for ‘unknown’ reasons, or under emotional stress of many kinds, during war, during mental hospital treatment or confinement in a concentration camp or prison.
