Carvel Rock

name

Etymology

Several theories exist about the origin of the names of the islets: * The islets are shaped roughly like a caravel; * The islets were mistaken for a hostile caravel by sailors and were entered as such on early maps; * A vessel mistook the islet(s) for a hostile caravel and opened fire on it; * The islets were used as a target for artillery practice and/or a way to unload ammunition before travelling to demilitarised islands.
